Part of the Dispatching Services, the Assisted Killing Scheme is aimed at linking inexperienced Co-Coop members with those more experienced when it comes to ending a chickens life. It is available for members who wish/ need to dispatch chickens for reasons such as:
- A chicken stops laying eggs
- A chicken takes to the habit of eating eggs
- A chicken is not accepted in to the flock
- A chicken is injured
- When celebrating a special occasion
* Please note that in the event of disease we recommend you contact the Farm’s Veterinary Services immediately. You can do so by visiting the Veterinary Services here.
This scheme is the free alternative to the dispatching services. We will arrange for an experienced Co-Coop member or a farm volunteer to drop by your house, to guide and aid you in humanely killing your chicken yourself. Allowing for a humane killing practice, avoids added stress to the animal caused by transportation and unfamiliar environment and other animals.
As the carer for the animal, this option offers a respectful death for your chicken. The experience is also an important and personal insight into the process of meat production.
During the visit you will be guided through the process and actions you should take. In order to make the process as quick and humane as possible, the experienced member will ensure every step is carried out the way it should.
This service is intended for training you to slaughtering chickens by using a heavy stick and the ‘Neck Wringing’ method, as this is considered the most humane way of killing on a small scale, home slaughter. Using an un-intrusive method also allows for healthy consumption of the meat from your chicken, should you wish to. We encourage the sharing of meat produce with your experienced assistant and Co-Coop members.
If you have humanely killed chickens before using the heavy stick or neck dislocation methods, you might wish to aid others when the need arises. Please fill in the form below to become part of this scheme:
